YWCA Canada is pleased to announce the re-launching of the Rose Button campaign, as a national advocacy campaign to end violence against women and girls. Sparked by the shocking murder of 14 young women at Montréal’s l'École Polytechnique, on December 6, 1989, the Rose Button now commemorates December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Twenty years later, a generation of young women has grown up in the shadow of this event but with no memory of it. To connect the next generation with the issue and put violence against women and girls back on the national agenda, YWCA Canada is re-launching the Rose Button campaign, aimed at creating awareness amongst young women. The new button has been redesigned by Joss Maclennan, the designer of the original button, with a take action messaging that indicates that we can all work towards stopping violence in our communities.
In addition to the Rose Button, YWCA Canada is producing a brochure and bookmark which outline clear steps for Taking Action on Violence Against Women:
· Encourage people who commit violence to get help
· Teach girls to protect and empower themselves
· Remember
As part of the 16 Days to End Violence Against Women and to launch the campaign, YWCA Canada will be holding a press conference on November 25th, the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women. We are looking for support from national organizations like yours to join us in the campaign and attend the press conference. Immediately following the announcement of the new federal cabinet, we will also be looking for Ministerial supporters to join us as well.
We are asking for your support and participation in this campaign by:
As you know from your work on the ground, violence against women is not just a women’s issue but a societal issue that affects all Canadians. Violence against women is the world’s largest and most persistent human rights violation, and Canada is no exception. Over 50% of Canadian women will experience violence at some point in their lives, the majority before they turn 25. In most cases, women know their abuser. Please help support the campaign to foster a healthy society by participating.
Attached please find a button order form and PDFs of the bookmark, which is English on one side and French on the other.
